ViDSS Brownbag Sessions

The ViDSS Brownbag Sessions provide possibilities for meeting and learning from experienced colleagues, graduates and guests. Most sessions take place online in order to allow as many early career researchers as possible to participate.

International mobility during the doctoral studies

Tuesday, 20 January 2026 | 13:30–15:00

This ViDSS Brownbag Session aims to provide practical tips and tricks for planning a research stay or fieldwork abroad and for submitting a successful funding application.

The session will address, among others, the following questions: Which international mobility opportunities are available to candidates in the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences? How can I find and approach a suitable host institution? What should I consider when applying for financial support for a research stay abroad or for a leave of absence from the University of Vienna?

Doctoral candidates who have already conducted research stays abroad will share insights from their experiences. Experts from the University of Vienna’s International Office will introduce different funding opportunities for doctoral candidates. Roman Pfefferle and Eva Kössner from the ViDSS administration team will provide additional advice.

With:

  • Franz Stefan Michalke, Head of International Cooperation, International Office
  • Quirin Rieder, ViDSS Student in social and cultural anthropology
  • Maryam Khaleghipour, ViDSS Student in communication

Moderation: Roman Pfefferle

Target group: doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences

Venue: online via Zoom

Registration: via u:rise until 15 January 2026

Research and publication services for early career researchers

Tuesday, 18 November 2025, 14:00–15:30

Do you know where to find existing social science data, how to collect, archive and enrich digital or digitised academic objects, how to publish open access, and how to increase your visibility? Have you already explored how to best use AI in your research? If not, take advantage of the University Library’s Research Support Services!

For our upcoming ViDSS Brownbag Session, we have invited colleagues from the University Library to provide an overview of their diverse services and to present upcoming training opportunities. You’ll learn about the principles of Open Science, Research Data Management (RDM), and FAIR data, and how these are relevant for you as PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. Learn how the Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA) supports early career researchers in archiving and sharing their data at the end of their projects, and gain first insights into the new “AI Literacy” workshop series.

With:

  • Anna Krenn, User Services, Team Teaching Library
  • Emily Kate, Data Steward
