Join DocSchool

Students who are members of ViDSS benefit from the supervisory structure of the doctoral school, take part in activities related to their cohort and can apply for additional funding to cover research and travel expenses. To join ViDSS, doctoral candidates must

1. find a supervisor who is a ViDSS member,
2. enrol in the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences (Directorate of Studies 40) at the University of Vienna and
3. consent to the Code of Good Practice for Doctoral Schools when submittung the ViDSS online application form.

Public presentation at the faculty within the first year

Candidates who have not yet passed the public presentation at the faculty will initially be granted temporary ViDSS membership for nine months. They should complete the public presentation at the faculty within this period. ViDSS may extend this deadline by up to three months.
 

Participation in activities

Student members of ViDSS are expected to submit regular progress reports and participate in at least one ViDSS event per year on average (e.g. the first-year retreat, workshops or brown-bag sessions). They should also join a PhD Club, which are groups of doctoral candidates organised by discipline or theme who meet monthly to discuss their work in progress. During their first three years of doctoral studies, student members should present their work in the form of a departmental or faculty-wide lecture, or at an international conference.
