Call for course proposals for the academic year 2025/2026

Dear supervisors in the doctoral programme in Social Sciences,

We, the team of the Social Sciences Directorate of Doctoral Studies, hereby invite you to propose courses for the academic year 2025/2026. To propose courses please fill out and submit the online form by 24 November 2024 (the form is available during the application period).

You can select from the following course types:

  • Introduction course
  • Research colloquium
  • Theory seminar
  • Methods seminar (Ethnography | Interpretative methodologies | Qualitative content analysis | Introduction to research design from a quantitative perspective | Introduction to regression models | or further topic)
  • Advanced methods seminar (Advanced research design from a quantitative perspective and causal inference | Advanced regression models | Advanced quantitative text analysis | or further topic)
  • Research workshop (Ethnographic writing and theory building | Analyses following interpretative methodologies | Advanced qualitative content analyses | or further topic)

For more information about the course types please consult the overview of course types on our website or the information sheet for lecturers in English or German. If you would like to propose more than one course, please submit the form for each course.

All courses as part of the doctoral programme in Social Sciences are courses with continuous assessment and two hours per week. This corresponds to 22.5 hours in class. Block-mode courses are possible.

We would like to encourage you to propose courses taught in English and to propose several options from which we can choose when compiling the programme. We particularly welcome suggestions for co-taught courses (two lecturers).

Coordination of methods courses

To facilitate decision-making on the final programme proposal for methods training (i.e. methods seminars and research workshops) two meetings will be held after the deadline (one for qualitative methods and one for quantitative methods).

The meetings will take place on the following dates:

Qualitative methods: 5 December 2024, 10:00–11:30
Online via Zoom: univienna.zoom.us/j/68313229959
(coordinated by Emma Dowling)

Quantitative methods: 4 December 2024, 11:30–13:00
Online via Zoom: univienna.zoom.us/j/67577823236
(coordinated by Thomas Meyer)

Participation in these meetings is recommended but not a requirement for teaching a course.

Based on your suggestions we will pre-select courses and propose a programme for the academic year 2025/2026. The programme proposal will then be discussed by the Studies Conference. Lecturers will be informed in early February 2025.

We look forward to receiving your proposals.

Best wishes,
The team of the Directorate of Doctoral Studies for Social Sciences
(Thomas Meyer, Caroline Berghammer, Tatjana Thelen, Claudia Wilhelm)
